The Skill Coaches of the five-time MLS Cup Champions the LA Galaxy visited the island on March 18th as a potential spot to hold a Soccer Camp. Working alongside the City Recreation Department the Coaches were able to set up a free clinic for the kids on Joe Machado field.

The Coaches, Wes Meadows, Chris Howe, and Rouzbeh Forouzanfar enjoyed the afternoon meeting Community members, the Avalon School administration and visiting with local businesses.  They were enamored with people and the beauty of the city.  Like most people who are first time visitors did not know this little oasis was in their backyard.  They talked to the City about doing camps here as well as possible tournaments.  The City believes this can be a great branding opportunity for both parties.

Later that afternoon the Coaches gave a free clinic on Joe Machado Field for all kids 6-18 years of age.  With over 60 kids participating.  The coaches were amazing the way they were able to organize, keep kids focus, and break down drills to get quick results in accomplishing those drills.  The hour and half clinic seemed to fly by as kids moved from drill to drill with no real downtime.  Every child seemed to enjoy the learning and as one High School soccer player said, “I still have a lot to learn”, sweating hard with a smile on his face.

Learning the game from the Galaxy Coaches is still something the children of Avalon can do.  They will be holding a 3 day camp here on Catalina Island, May 8-10th.  The camp will include 3 days of training, a Galaxy t-shirt, a certificate of completion and ticket to a Galaxy game, all for $150.  Plus if you’re an Islander a 10% Discount code can be utilized and will expire April 5th.  The code is CATALINA10.  People will need to enter this when registering at lagalaxy.com/camps/home.  You can also register through the City of Avalon’s Recreation Department.

The LA Galaxy would like to thank the people of Avalon for their gracious attitude and hope to be more connected to the Island in the future.
