City of Avalon recreational areas improved

City of Avalon

The City of Avalon has recently completed renovations and artifical turf installation at Joe Machado Field and Avalon Fit Trail to Debut December 23, 2016.

Avalon's athletic facility named Joe Machado field is located in Avalon Canyon. The field was originally built in 1993 and is regularly used for baseball, softball, football and various community events.

The renovations were largely funded by a $500,000 grant from Anheuser Busch following the city being host destination of Budweiser’s Up For Whatever event in 2015.  “Switching to artificial turf will help to address the drought conditions currently facing the island and its residents while providing a superior playing surface for games and events,” said Mayor Anni Marshall.

The Avalon Fit Trail is under construction in Avalon Canyon with installations from the lower canyon at Avalon People’s Park continuing to the upper canyon at Joe Machado Field. The distance between the two workout areas is .7 mi. Site work is currently underway for the project.

The fitness equipment at Avalon People’s Park has been installed and completion of the project is anticipated to be Friday December 23, 2016.  Once completed, there will be 8 upper body/core strengthening stations at Joe Machado Field and a nice mix of 17 cardio and strength training pieces of equipment at Avalon People’s Park. Exercises at Avalon People’s Park will range from cardio exercises on an outdoor elliptical and rowing machine to strength training pieces to include a bench press, a shoulder press and a leg press.
