The Catalina Island Museum is pleased to announce it will be a participant in the BIG DRAW LA. This is the first time Avalon has joined the countywide event that is hosted by organizations of all sizes to encourage the community to come together and draw. Avalon’s Big Draw LA will take place in the Catalina Island Museum’s Hinchliffe Family Atrium. Visitors to the museum will lend their creativity and collaborative spirit in a guided drawing experience. Each completed artwork will be placed with others to form one large Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) inspired mural with a Catalina twist: a mermaid in skeletal form. This accumulative community project will be displayed at the museum through November 2nd. Drawing supplies will be provided for this project that is open to people of any age and of any artistic level.

On October 30th, and in celebration of Día de los Muertos, the Catalina Island Museum will erect an ofrenda in its Hagenah Family Lobby. An ofrenda is an alter set up during the Mexican holiday, Día de los Muertos, to honor deceased family members. The Avalon community ofrenda will be decorated with traditional paper cuttings, sugar skulls and marigold flowers. The Catalina Island Museum requests the Avalon community to contribute images, mementos, favorite foods and beverages of family members and friends to be placed on the ofrenda. This is the first year the museum has celebrated Día de los Muertos, but it hopes to grow the celebration into an annual event. The ofrenda may be added to, and will be on view from, October 30th through November 2nd.

There is no charge to participate in Avalon’s Big Draw LA or to contribute or view Avalon’s community ofrenda.

The Catalina Island Museum offers the best in art and history exhibitions, music and dance performances, lectures by guest speakers from all over the world, and the finest in silent, documentary and international film.
