Catalina Island Chili Cook-off

The Avalon Rotary Club is pleased to host the Catalina Island Chili Cook-off May 21st from 11am to 6pm at South Beach. This is an International Chili Society (ICS) event with the winner representing Catalina Island and the Rotary Club in the World Chili Cookoff. The winner will be qualified to compete for the top prize of $25,000 plus bragging rights in Reno, NV next October.

The ICS cooks will cook red and green chili along with salsa. Plus we have a People’s choice chili and salsa contest, which is open to non-ICS cooks. Each contest will have cash prizes and awards. Anyone can cook in the ICS portion of the contest by joining the ICS for an annual membership of $60.00 plus regular contest entrance fees. For those who want to compete but don't want to join ICS, you can enter the  People's Choice Chili or Salsa event, the cost is only $15 and $10, respectively.

If you'd like to compete, bring your best recipe and remember that the more you cook the better your chance of winning. People’s Choice chili can be made ahead of time or at the event. Each cook needs to bring at least one gallon of chili and a Coleman stove or crock pot to keep your chili “hot”.  Salsa chefs should bring at least one gallon. Chili cook-offs are a team event! Get your team together and bring out the spirit of competition!

In addition to lots of chili there will be music provided by Blackjack, games for kids and adults, a wine & beer garden, plus food for purchase provided by the Lobster Trap.

Entry fees for the event are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Your ticket includes chili and salsa tasting while supplies last and each person gets 3 votes for chili and 3 votes for salsa. You can purchase your tickets at the Catalina Chamber of Commerce on the Pier or online at Eventbrite.com.

The Rotary Club is a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors, medical transportation assistance, and a host of other philanthropic activities that benefit our community.
