Avalon Harbor Activity Report - September 2016

2016-10-07
City of Avalon

The weekdays in September slowed down a little, but not the weekends! Labor Day weekend was, of course, very busy, even with many schools starting earlier this year.  All moorings were occupied and some boats at anchor.

The second weekend of the month also proved to be quite busy, also filling up our moorings.  We had 20 vessels visit with the South West Yacht Club, the Catalina Island Yacht Club Bill Fish tournament and the 57th Annual Catalina Crossing Outrigger Race. The latter brought over 77 outrigger canoes and 98 chase boats.  On Saturday the 10th, 75 Women’s and Co-Ed teams completed the race with the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club taking 1st place in the Women’s category and the Santa Barbara Outrigger Club taking 1st place for the Co-Ed category. On Sunday the 11th, 61 Men’s and Co-Ed Masters teams completed the race with Paddling Connection taking 1st place in the Men’s category and Imua Outrigger Canoe Club taking 1st in the Co-Ed Masters category.

The third weekend of September made a good attempt to keep up with the first two weekends by bringing boats and visitors to the island for the Tuna Club Fishing Tournament, the Catalina Island Art Festival and the Women’s Forum Wine Festival.

The second annual Avalon Billfish Challenge was held September 18th to the 20th with numerous fish tagged and released.

On the 24th, 45 boats that participated in a Poker Run from Long Beach to Avalon spent the day enjoying our great weather and patronizing our shops and restaurants.

And finally, the last day of September was the first day of the Catalina Island Film Festival!
