Avalon Harbor Activity Report - October 2016
City of Avalon
While the weekdays slowed, the weekends remained busy. The first weekend, Avalon was host to the Catalina Island Film Festival, the cruise ship Celebrity visited on Saturday and some of the pirates from Buccaneer Days at the Isthmus invaded our shores.
On October 8th, the annual Long Beach Yacht Club Race from Long Beach to Long Point brought many of the sail boats to Avalon Harbor for the night.
Avalon Harbor Department’s winter rates (pay two nights in advance and get the next five consecutive nights for free) began on October 15th.
Jazz Trax was held the third and fourth weekends of the month this year, and always brings a great crowd.
Third weekend, Avalon Harbor was pleased to have the Dana Point Yacht Club, Dana West Yacht Club, Channel Cruising Club, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club and Horizon Yacht Club spend the weekend with us; over 80 boats in all.
Finally, the last weekend of the month was pretty quiet in the Harbor. Some people think winter begins in December. In Avalon, you know it’s winter when the Joe’s Rent-A-Boat moorings are removed. So for us, winter began October 30th (and to top it off, we actually received a tiny bit of rain over the weekend!).
All EMT-trained Harbor Patrol Officers participated in a two day Continuing Education course to maintain their certification. Each year the trainers set up real life scenarios. This year the participants practiced delivering a baby and rescuing a diver who had symptoms of embolism. While the “victims” are not professional actors, it sounds like they have a future on the big screen, acting out real-life scenarios and symptoms that challenged the skills and wits of our local EMTs.
