Avalon Harbor Activity Report - May 2017

2017-06-13
City of Avalon

Avalon Harbor had the pleasure of visits from Mackerel Flats Yacht Club, Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, Seagate Yacht Club, Dana Point Yacht Club and Long Beach Yacht Club.  Altogether these clubs brought over about 70 boats.

The Catalina Island Yacht Club held their Work Weekend and their Summer 2017 Opening Ceremonies this month.  They honored retiring Harbor Master Bray for his years of service.

The Sixth Annual Catalina Island Classic Downhill Skateboard Race was held the first weekend of May, as was the 23rd Catalina Island Rugby Festival and the Avalon Rotary Club’s Chili Cook-off.  There was something for everyone!

The new Avalon Fuel Dock was completed and opened mid-month.  The dinghy dock and ramp will be installed at a later date.  Negotiations for a restaurant to be built on the dock are on-going.

The weekend prior to Memorial Day is usually fairly quiet; however, this year we saw 285 boats in Avalon the weekend before the holiday!

On Memorial Day weekend there were 372 boats in the Avalon area (this number includes “side ties”).  The weather was beautiful and there were no weather advisories.

Weather wise, May saw about a half inch of rain, one gale warning and 7 days with small craft advisories.  The infamous “May grey” only showed up a couple of days.
