Avalon Harbor Activity Report - June 2016
City of Avalon
Avalon was host to the filming of the Great Food Truck Race season finale. The final two trucks were in Avalon and competed to see which truck would sell the most food.
The Lavey Craft Group (go-fast style power boats) brought more than 20 boats over the first weekend of the month. The Tuna Club White Seabass Tournament and the Just for the Halibut Tournament were both held the same weekend.
Once again, Father’s Day weekend proved to be very popular and included several boats from Del Rey Yacht Club for their annual Father’s Day cruise.
While the weather was the typical June gloom, Catalina Island, along with the rest of the Southern California Coast, experienced hazardous south swells for much of the month. These south swells may have contributed to two separate very tragic incidents off the back side of the island. On the 2nd, a young man fell out of a skiff and drown while fishing near China Point. On the 25th, a 23 foot vessel capsized while fishing near Salta Verde with 7 persons on board. Unfortunately three men aboard drown. Think SAFETY and always wear your life jackets!
On a brighter note, the Budweiser Clydesdales arrived in Avalon on the 28th in preparation for the Fourth of July Parade. The 10 large beauties were stabled in the lot where the new Vons Market is slated to be built. Their handlers would take them out for a walk every morning for exercise. They spent their spare time making beer deliveries to local establishments and providing photo opportunities at select locations around town.
