Avalon Harbor Activity Report - July 2016

2016-09-04
City of Avalon

What can you say about the Fourth of July...it was BUSY!  The cruise ship Carnival Imagination was at anchor with 2,671 additional guests enjoying Avalon’s festivities.  In addition, we had 407 boats on moorings and about 13 boats at anchor.

The Fourth of July Parade was made extra special with Budweiser Clydesdales taking up the tail (figuratively and literally) of the parade and, of course; it is always a pleasure to have the USC Band join us for the fun.

With so many people in town, we were fortunate not to have too many incidents.  A local golf cart with three people on board ended up running off Wrigley Road and landing in a bush.  The passengers had minor injuries, but should be very thankful to the bush!  On the way down, they hit a fresh water line and Avalon had its own “Old Faithful” for almost an hour.  The water made it all the way down to the Avalon Bowl.

The 68th Annual Catalina Ski Race was held on July 16th.  Thirty-one boats participated and the race is 62 miles round trip from Long Beach to Avalon.  If you’re interested in learning more about the race, you can go to http://www.catalinaskirace.net/.

On July 29th a boat fire was reported on a vessel about 4 miles east of Avalon.  Avalon Harbor Patrol’s Rescue 2 responded with Patrol Officer Cameron and Harbor Master Bray on board, along with Baywatch Avalon, with LA County Fire on board.  The vessel’s engine had caught fire, but had been put out by the time the rescue boats arrived.  The vessel had to be towed to Avalon by Rescue 2 with Baywatch Avalon Assisting.  No one was injured.
