Avalon Harbor Activity Report - August 2016

2016-09-15
City of Avalon

The weather was nice, the water was warm and August was BUSY!  We had about 300 more boats visit Avalon than in August 2015.  As in July, Avalon Harbor moorings were full by Thursday afternoon, with the all moorings full by Friday afternoon.

August 4th was the grand opening of Avalon’s newest activity, Action Fly Boarding.  Just strap on the boots, a helmet, a life vest and take off…literally!  Check it out at: www.facebook.com/CatalinaFlyboarding/photos.

Avalon Harbor had a real life test of its newly installed backup generator on August 5th.  Avalon experienced a town-wide power outage, but the Harbor’s new generator kicked in immediately and it was business as usual!

On August 12th, Harbor Patrol Officer Cameron, John Council from Marine Animal Rescue and two local swimmers helped free a sea turtle from a fishing hook and some fishing line.  There had been a few reported sightings of the troubled turtle, but he remained allusive for a couple of days.  Once freed, the sea turtle appeared healthy and was returned to Lovers Cove.

There was a report of a fire on a vessel moored in Avalon Harbor on the 18th.  Avalon Harbor Patrols, Baywatch Avalon and County Fire were quick to respond.  Fortunately, the smoke was coming from a burned water pump impellor an there was minimal damage.  The occupants were removed as a precautionary measure.
