CIMC Offers Free Diabetes Prevention Seminar

Catalina Island Medical Center if offering monthly seminars on weight loss and diabetes. Jessica Brantley-Lopez, registered dietitian visits Catalina Island Medical Center each month to consult with patients and teach a free seminar on diabetes prevention, controlling blood sugar and weight loss.

According to the American Diabetes Association 29.1 million Americans have diabetes (including over 8 million people who are undiagnosed). 13.9% of Mexican Americans have diabetes as compared to an average of 7.6% of Caucasian (white) Americans.

Jessica Brantley-Lopez  met with 12 people who had questions about diabetes and weight loss in an informal meeting on August 24. She will be back to teach another free class on maintaining a healthy lifestyle on Wednesday September 21 at 5:30 pm in the Hotel Metropole Conference Room.

Get information on food and nutrition, how to increase activity levels and what to expect when diagnosed with diabetes or  unsafe blood sugar levels. Weight loss and the prevention of diabetes with tips on portion control, hydration and exercise will also be discussed.
