October 15th, 2016 has been set as the date for the second Annual Avalon Charity Home Tour. This is a rare opportunity to visit some of Catalina’s most spectacular properties never before open to the public. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the Catalina Island Foundation, an island-based fund dedicated to supporting local community service groups.

After 13 years as president and CEO of the Catalina Island Conservancy, Ann M. Muscat, PhD, will be retiring on Oct 7. As Ann leaves for her next adventure, we look back at highlights of the Conservancy’s accomplishments during her tenure.

El Galleon Restaurant & Karaoke Lounge is celebrating good food and fun times with special menus for Lobsterfest & Oktoberfest! Oktoberfest, September 23 through November 6th, offers Happy Hour Bar Specials from 3:00-6:00pm. The special menu includes a large Kielbasa appetizer served with a flavorful luau BBQ sauce and onion rings for just $9 along with thirst quenching icy cold mugs of Paulaner Bier from Munich featuring Lager, Hefe-Weizen, Premium Pilsner and Oktoberfest Dark (1/2 liter $7.50/1 liter mug $15).

The internet world has been beckoning us for a while now. Afishinados Charters has been on-line for reservations since 2009, however, Afishinados Gallery has not. It is a regular occurrence to be asked by a customer, “Do you have a web site where I can buy on-line?” It seems such an obvious next step for us, however our progress on-line has been slow. We are not sure how ‘Social’ the internet really is.

Last Thursday, the Catalina Women’s Golf Club held their annual Fall Putting Tournament at Hamilton Cove. Golf club hospitality chair Sue Bray provided a lovely continental breakfast before the tournament started. The competition began using a shot-gun start format. Eight teams competed on the eighteen hole course. Awards were given in two categories: for team scores and for individual low scores. First place for lowest individual score went to Marsha Aquinde. Ellen Hodge was second, and four golfers tied for fourth place: Elena Maria, Barbara Ehret, Pam Martin and Carol Deets.
The Rotary Club of Avalon is pleased to announce that they have received a matching grant in through Rotary District 5320 in the amount of $5,000. This grant will assist low-income community members with the cost of boat transportation for medical or surgical services that are not available on the island. The Rotary Club of Avalon provides $2,500 and that amount is matched by Rotary District 5320, which covers Orange and Southern Los Angeles Counties.

October means oysters at Bluewater Avalon – specifically, sustainably harvested oysters roasted three ways and paired with hand-selected Firestone beers and wine for the perfect fall indulgence. The Oct. 11 “Roasted Oyster Roundup” tasting pairs a dozen fire-roasted Mendocino oysters served in three distinct styles.
Catalina Island Medical Center if offering monthly seminars on weight loss and diabetes. Jessica Brantley-Lopez, registered dietitian visits Catalina Island Medical Center each month to consult with patients and teach a free seminar on diabetes prevention, controlling blood sugar and weight loss.
