Avalon High School’s Lady Lancers Make Playoffs

Going into the last 2 games against Vivian Webb High School the Avalon Lady Lancers knew what was at stake. Either win these last two games of the season or stay home for the playoffs. Friday February 10th would be the first game of the two game series. This night would also be Senior night, honoring those who have given 4 yrs to the program and its school.

Seeds Remind Patients to Help Medical Center “Grow” its Quality of Service

In March 2016, Jason Paret, CEO of Catalina Island Medical Center contracted with Press Ganey, an industry leader in measuring and evaluating hospital performance, to know “what we do well and what needs to change.” Patients are asked to grade their most recent health care experiences in the emergency department, physician’s office, laboratory, radiology and physical therapy. This information has revealed that there’s work to be done.

Bluewater’s “Foods of Love” celebration every February tests the aphrodisiacal qualities of oysters and champagne and has become so popular that Executive Chef Jason Mazur has expanded it this year into a special three-course menu served throughout the month. “Bluewater’s Foods of Love” at Bluewater Avalon starts with Domain Ste. Michelle Brut or Mionetto Prosecco Italian sparkling wine but then lets romantics create their own menu of love-inducing favorites.

Rains Bring Some Welcome Relief for Catalina Residents, Businesses

Recent storms are bringing some welcome relief to Catalina Island residents after five months of living with Stage 3 water-rationing levels due to California’s historic drought. At Tuesday’s Avalon City Council meeting, Southern California Edison, the island’s water utility, announced that more than 90 percent of the island’s customers will see a return to lower water-rationing levels.

Course Catalina Educates Future Scientists

The youngsters eagerly hiked nearly three miles roundtrip to Catalina’s Ben Weston Beach, frequently stopping on the trail to ask about plants and bugs and how they fit into the Island’s ecosystem. They dug through the sand at the beach in search of tiny insects they’d never seen before, and they seriously sniffed a twig of coastal sage to understand why it’s sometimes called “cowboy cologne.”

Avalon's long wait for a full-time librarian is over. Morgan Pershing began her first day here giving the fourth digital seminar sponsored by the Friends of the Avalon Library on January 24, 2017. Pershing, and yes, she is related to General of the Armies John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing, comes from San Jose.

New Year’s weekend was fairly quiet. The temperature was seasonal and, thankfully, there were no weather warnings for the weekend! Finally, WE GOT RAIN! We received 2 inches more rain in January this year than we received in all of 2014 and 2015, combined. The island is clean and green!
