Avalon Harbor Activity Report - January 2017

2017-02-02
City of Avalon

New Year’s weekend was fairly quiet. The temperature was seasonal and, thankfully, there were no weather warnings for the weekend!

Finally, WE GOT RAIN!  We received 2 inches more rain in January this year than we received in all of 2014 and 2015, combined. On January 22nd we received almost 3 inches. The island is clean and green!

In addition to the rain, we had 14 total days of weather warnings; 12 Small Craft Advisories and 2 Gale Warnings. On January 20th, we saw a gust at 53 kts. (or 61 MPH).

The City of Avalon put out a second RFP for shore boat services. The submittal deadline was 3:00 pm on 1/31/2017.

The new fuel dock is coming along nicely; the pier fuel dispensers are installed and the building is nearing completion The fuel dock and restrooms should be open this spring. The café plans still have not been finalized.

The City completed its upgrades to the Mole playground, sand volleyball court and basketball court. The playground is now called Knabe Park after our long time County Supervisor, Don Knabe. He was always a great representative and friend to the City of Avalon. The Harbor Department wishes him a wonderful retirement.

Last, but not least, the Harbor Live Cam is finally back up! Although…when it was pouring rain, it was kind of nice to go to the Cam and see sunshine and a full harbor.
