Avalon is situated on the easterly portion of Catalina Island, 22 miles south/southwest of the Los Angeles Harbor breakwater. Avalon is a little over 2 2/3 square miles in size. The island itself is 76 square miles in area, 85% of which is in a conservancy area to be maintained in its natural state in perpetuity. The picturesque and leisurely seaport village of Avalon has a permanent population of around 3,500, with an annual visitor count of close to one million. The Island’s primary industry is tourism.

Solicited by the Rotary Club in Avalon, the donation from SCE and a matching allocation from the City of Avalon, spurred a Community Gardening Day which was successful in planting over 100 trees and plants in the way of a variety of palms, shrubs and succulents.

Nine swimmers braved the cold water the morning of New Years Day for the Polar Bear Swim. The event took place on New Year's Day and was hosted by the Catalina Swim Club and sponsored by the City of Avalon. Swimmers were greeted by water temperature of 58 degrees for their 1 - 1.5 mile swim and then treated to hot chocolate and other goodies after the swim.

Avalon Gets The Gift of Fitness For Christmas The City of Avalon hosted a Ribbon Cutting, or Ribbon Unwrapping, on Friday December 23rd for the Avalon Fit Trail at Kid's Park just in time for Christmas. About 30 people were on-hand for the celebration with festive music, healthy snacks and a 20 minute demonstration class to "get fit" prior to all the holiday goodies.

On Friday, January 6th, a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Celebration will take place for Knabe Park at The Mole. The event is scheduled for 11:00am and the community is invited to the opening. Knabe Park formerly known as Mole Park, has undergone replacement of the children’s play structure that has a nautical theme with a pirate ship, a slide and climbing structures; renovations to update the basketball and volleyball court; and the addition of two swings opposite Veteran’s Park.

Finally! Some rain! We received a total of 1.2 inches over four rain days. The Annual Catalina Island Triathlon was held on November 5th and the Eco Marathon was held on November 19th. The latter also included a Half Marathon, 10k and kids run. Both of these events draw boaters, as well as hotel guests. The weather was fairly cool for both, with temperatures in the mid-60s.

While the weekdays slowed, the weekends remained busy. The first weekend, Avalon was host to the Catalina Island Film Festival, the cruise ship Celebrity visited on Saturday and some of the pirates from Buccaneer Days at the Isthmus invaded our shores. On October 8th, the annual Long Beach Yacht Club Race from Long Beach to Long Point brought many of the sail boats to Avalon Harbor for the night.

It is rare in these times to find such a quality working relationship between a California County and its elected supervisor and a City.

The weather was nice, the water was warm and August was BUSY! We had about 300 more boats visit Avalon than in August 2015. As in July, Avalon Harbor moorings were full by Thursday afternoon, with the all moorings full by Friday afternoon. August 4th was the grand opening of Avalon’s newest activity, Action Fly Boarding. What can you say about the Fourth of July...it was BUSY! The cruise ship Carnival Imagination was at anchor with 2,671 additional guests enjoying Avalon’s festivities.
