Catalina's Aviation History Revealed
Article dated: Thursday, July 24, 2008
The importance of air transportation to and from Catalina is captured in the new pictorial history title, Catalina By Air. The book chronicles 90 years of aviation history and boasts more than 200 vintage images. Local author, Jeannine L. Pedersen, releases new book in conjunction with The Catalina Island Museum.
A trip across the San Pedro Channel today takes about 15 minutes via helicopter, but early trips dating back to 1912, were taken in amphibious planes which landed in Avalon Bay. Highlights of Catalina By Air include the different airplanes, seaplanes and helicopters that have ferried passengers to and from Catalina.
Catalina By Air covers public air transportation to and from Southern California's iconic island, featuring memories and stories from residents, visitors, and airline employees.
Author Jeannine L. Pedersen hopes "the book will bring back many fond memories for the Island's local residents and the many visitors who traveled to Catalina Island by air over the years." The book will be available online in the eCatalina.com Store.
