AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Under near perfect conditions and sunny skies, the 33rd annual Catalina Marathon introduced a new course record set by female winner Heather Fuhr with a time of 3:07:00.The "Number 1 Off Road Marathon" course did not disappoint this year; the 23 miles of trail were hard and fast with spectacular views of the ocean and even a few buffaloes. This unique event allows athletes an "inside look" into the interior of historic Santa Catalina Island, running from Two Harbors to Avalon across a mostly uninhabited landscape.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Recently, Catalina Island stakeholders have created the Catalina Island Consortium to better understand the implications of Southern California Edison's desired divestiture of the island's water and gas utilities. The Catalina Island Consortium consists of the City of Avalon, the Catalina Island Conservancy, the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Catalina Island Company, the University of Southern California, a representative of all of Catalina's youth camps and the Hamilton Cove Homeowners Association.

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND - Another wet month with almost 4 inches of rain did wonders for our reservoir. The island is a bright emerald color with the burn areas looking lush. On the 5th we received almost 2 inches with measurable amounts over 7 other days ending with .69 on the 27th. Even with our 8 days of measured rain, we had only 3 Small Craft Advisories. Due to the earthquake in Chile on the 27th a Tsunami Advisory was issued for areas including the coastal areas of California and stated that a tsunami is capable of producing strong currents or waves. Some California marine areas did experience high waves, flooding and unusual tide conditions and although the Advisory for our waters did spark much concern, Avalon seemed unaffected.

Although the level has risen above 600 acre feet the island will continue to be in Phase 1 rationing. Southern California Edison will release information regarding this matter in the very near future. When you live on an island it always helps to save as much water as you can and SCE is offering free water saving devices to customers.

The race starts in Avalon and ends 39.8 miles later in Dana point. This event will challenge any paddler racing on single or double outriggers as well as stand up surfboards and paddleboards.
