Mornings at the Nursery

Every Thursday weekly

7:15 a.m. to Noon - Volunteer at the James H. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery in Middle Ranch and enjoy a beautiful morning drive through the interior of Catalina. While at the nursery you will perform a variety of essential horticultural tasks, all while learning about Catalina’s unique environment and the native plant species found here. 48 hours advance notice required - leave Avalon at 7:15am and return by noon. Bald Eagle Restoration Lecture

Dr. Peter Sharpe, of the Institute for Wildlife Studies will talk about the history of Bald Eagle recovery on Catalina dn the Channel Islands and give an update on their current status. Underwater Cleanup

February 25, 2017

Southern California divers have made the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup one of their premier social events of the year. Divers retrieve trash and lost items from Avalon Harbor, and revel in the warm friendly atmosphere of Catalina Island. Last year, approximately 343 participants recovered 4,980 pounds of trash. Proceeds from the event will benefit USC’s Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber and Wrigley Institute Scientific Diving Program.

Museum Exhibitions Fall & Winter

October 29, 2016 - March 5, 2017

The Catalina Island Museum is pleased to announce the opening of its fall and winter season exhibitions. Art Nouveau and Graphic Art: The PAN Publications, 1895-1900 and Bon Voyage! Posters from the Golden Age of Travel. Both of the exhibitions are the first of their kind to be presented on Santa Catalina Island. The exhibits will be on view from October 29, 2016 – March 5, 2017.

An Evening with Oscar

Catalina Marathon

March 11, 2017

Coming up on its 40th Anniversary, this "bucket list" marathon features the exciting and historic marathon course used largely since the first year on the Catalina Island Conservancy’s lands. This includes much of the rugged terrain, spectacular vistas, challenging climbs and special challenges enjoyed by thousands of runners over the years! PLus a 10K, 5K and Kids Run. In cooperation with our host, Catalina Island Conservancy, the Catalina Island Marathon is a CUPLESS COURSE! For hydration, we will be offering participants the option to purchase a $5 Salomon reusable soft-cup or provide your own hydration system. Thank you for helping us reduce the footprint on the island! Volunteers welcome & appreciated. Spectrum Sports Management.

Windward Beaches Cleanup

2nd Saturday of each month

Volunteer in the great outdoors while combing the sand for debris to help keep our windward beaches pristine. Clean-up locations (Shark Harbor, Little Harbor, Ben Weston and Cottonwood) rotate throughout the year. Meet at the Catalina Island Conservancy House, 125 Clarissa, at 9am, return at 1pm. Aero Club Social Fly-In

2nd Saturday of each month

Fly-in or take the Wildlands Express from the Avalon Plaza to the Airport in the Sky. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit with Aero Club pilots from around the region and viewing amazing airplanes. 2nd Saturday of the month.

Museum Chihuly Exhibition

March 26 - December 11, 2017

The exhibition, Chihuly at the Catalina Island Museum, will open on March 26, 2017 and run through December 11, 2017. Chihuly, an American sculptor, has mastered the alluring, translucent and transparent qualities of ice, water, glass and neon, to create works of art that transform the viewer experience.  He is globally renowned for his ambitious site-specific architectural installations in public spaces, and in exhibitions presented in museums and gardens worldwide.

22nd Annual Conservancy Ball

Taking Flight is the theme of the 22nd Annual Catalina Island Conservancy Ball in Avalon's Casino Ballroom. Taking Flight highlights all our feathered friends that call upon the Island during their journey. Silent and Live Auctions. Black Tie. 2017 Silent Film Benefit

This silent adventure is the first film adaptation of J.M. Barrie's play entitled, Peter Pan. In the story, Peter Pan was a magical boy who refuses to grow up and brings the Darling children to Neverland. Their adventures include a confrontation with Captain Hook and his crew. Filmed on Catalina Island, Peter Pan has been called "one of the greatest children's films ever made." The Silent Film Benefit provides the rare opportunity to experience cinema the way it was originally intended, with live musical accompaniment by an orchestra in a grand movie palace. 15th Annual Avalon Ball

The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles will host the 15th annual Avalon Ball in the Cataina Casino Ballroom on May 20. This event is a journey into the past when Big Bands played for large audiences and the performances were broadcast to the nation in the Art Deco Casino Ballroom built in 1929. This magical night will feature an evening of dancing to music from the 1920s and 30s performed by Dean Mora & the Avalon Ball Dance Orchestra. 69th Catalina Ski Race

August 12, 2017

The annual Catalina Ski Race is the premiere water ski race in the world, but the it is more than just a race. With its rich 69 year history, quality of competition, and challenge of the open ocean, the Catalina Ski Race has earned its place on the world stage. The 62 mile-long race to Avalon and back makes it only turn just offshore of Descanso Beach and Hamilton Cove. Water skiers from around the globe come to participate. This race has notoriety because of the number of participants, and because it is the only open-ocean ski race regularly scheduled anywhere in the world. It is an especially unique challenge to compete across 62 miles of ocean. It is highly coveted and followed around the ski racing world.

2017 US Outrigger Championships

September 9-10, 2017

58th Annual Catalina Channel Crossing US Outrigger Championships. Come out and see the women finish the longest Polynesian canoe race in the continental U.S., 26 miles from Newport Beach to Avalon, on Saturday, at Casino Point. Then enjoy the after race Hawaiian festivities at the center of town; including music and beer garden. On Sunday watch the men start their race back to Newport Beach from Lovers Cove. Proceeds of the event go to support local charities. Southern California Outrigger Racing Association.

Catalina Film Festival 2017

Catalina Trail Venture Weekend 2017

24th Annual Shop Catalina

5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. - A one-night shopping extravaganza with holiday discounts of 10-25%, strolling Victorina costumed Holiday Carolers and prize drawings! Shop Catalina Night kicks off at Wrigley Stage at 5pm with a holiday tree lighting ceremony and arrival of Santa and his “helpers” on a City of Avalon Fire Truck.
